McDonald’s claims that almost all of its paper packaging uses sustainable fibers

New York, August 19 (Reuters)-McDonald’s (MCD.N) said on Thursday that it almost achieved its goal of using recycled or sustainable fibers for all paper food packaging purchased in restaurants.
The Chicago-based global burger chain stated in its annual sustainability report that by 2020, 99.6% of paper bags, food wrappers, napkins, cup holders and other fiber materials used to package meals for customers will come from recycling or Certified sustainable fiber sources, up from 92% in 2019.
Many chain restaurants are working to reduce the environmental hazards of packaging, including using more recyclable or compostable materials and allowing customers to reuse cups or bowls.
Adweek-Harris Poll’s April survey of American adults on disposable fast food packaging found that 62% of respondents said they would prefer to switch to brands with recyclable packaging, and 81% of respondents were worried about trash and Polluting fast food restaurants.
Since McDonald’s has more than 39,000 restaurants worldwide, minor changes may affect other companies and industries.
McDonald’s has set a larger goal that by 2025, all of its customers’ packaging will come from renewable, recycled or certified sources. Currently, 80% of its packaging comes from such sources. It said it also uses paper straws and wooden tableware in multiple markets, and is exploring fiber lids and reusable cups.
